In yesterday’s training, we discussed why most people fail in MLM. Today, we will discuss what it takes to succeed in MLM.
So, what does it really take to succeed in MLM? That seems to be the million-dollar question on the internet. If I had to break it down into two things, I would choose (1) the right mind-set and (2) the right skill-set. It takes a certain mind-set and skill-set to succeed in our industry, or any other industry.
Your mind-set boils down to your attitude and thinking. It includes discipline, perseverance, strong work ethic, leadership abilities, communication skills, and more. And your skill-set boils down your ability to master sales, marketing, lead generation, closing, inviting, and more. Fortunately, you can develop these two things. It might take some time, money and energy, but it will be time and money well invested!
What you will see below are my top 14 things you need to do to succeed at network marketing. Enjoy!
# 1 Posture: Everything starts with you. Would you want to recruit someone exactly like you into your downline? If not, you need to work on yourself and become a leader. You need to develop self-confidence and posture, so others are attracted to you and want to do business with you. The best way to improve your posture is to read. Take courses. Attend seminars. Start acting like a leader.
If you have issues with self-confidence and self-esteem, get help. Work on it. Because as long as you have low self-esteem or think badly about yourself, or what you do for a living, others will too. People want to do business with leaders. They want to work with people who are confident, successful and have great posture. People are attracted to people who know who they are and where they are headed in life. Another good word for posture is attitude or confidence.
# 2 Influence: This one ranks high on the list as well. Every network marketing leader that I know of has influence. To me, the definition of leadership is influence. The reason that one person succeeds and another person struggles to recruit others and build a team is influence. People who get off to a fast start in our industry have influence with others. People know, like, trust and respect them and listen to their advice. You have to remember that people don’t join companies, they join people. You have to be someone worth joining. The more influence you have, the better you will do.
# 3 Vision: Successful network marketers see things before they exist. Most people in the world can’t see past their next pay check. And they wonder why they struggle. Top earners are visionaries. They saw the big picture early on in the business. They don’t let the minutia take over their lives. They begin with the end in mind, have clear goals, and have a concrete game plan to get there. They have a good idea what they want their business to look like in 12 months, five years and ten years. Their vision is what carries them through the difficult times.
# 4 Focus: To succeed in network marketing you need to focus on ONE COMPANY and ONE STRATEGY until successful. You need to minimize distractions, avoid the shiny object syndrome and stay with one thing until successful. If you’re always switching companies or trying new strategies, you are in for a rude awakening.
# 5 Strong Work Ethic: I’ve never met a successful, lazy person. There might be a couple in our industry, but I don’t know of any. To succeed in this business you are going to have to roll up your sleeves, work hard, and work smart. You’ll have to put in the hours, deal with rejection, get up one more time than you are knocked down, and work your business every day.
# 6 Daily Mode of Operations: successful distributors know exactly what they are going to do each day to build their business. They have a prioritized “to do” list and focus on the money producing activities. When they work, they work. They focus on the task at hand and avoid distractions. They can do more in one hour than most people do in a week, because they focus and concentrate, and have a game plan with their time.
# 7 Mental Toughness: This business is not for timid or weak people. You have to be mentally tough to deal with the rejection and disappointment. You have to detach your emotions from the outcome and only focus on the activities. You have to be emotionally constant. The sooner you learn how to deal with these things the better off you will be.
# 8 People Skills: Every top earner I have ever met had great people skills. They could get along with many different types of people. They were patient, good listeners and they have a genuine interest in others. This is the ultimate people business.
# 9 Serious Commitment: In order to succeed at network marketing, you must make a serious commitment to your business. Most top earners spend at least five to ten years with the same company, before they make it big. They realize that “any business” requires a serious commitment and hard work.
At a bare bones minimum, you should make a commitment to work your business six to seven days a week for two years before you determine whether or not it is the right fit for you. This is hands down why most people fail. Most people dabble or try it out and quit in 60 days and then give up.
You will never achieve any type of lasting success in 60 days or less, in ANY business. Good things take time. Even if you work your business part-time, like an hour a day, you must be willing to invest two (or more) years to build up any type of serious income. After all, you probably went to college for four years (and paid money to go) and never questioned it. You weren’t guaranteed a job when you graduated or even a certain income level, but you did it anyway.
# 10 Persistence: Top earners are bulldogs. Nothing keeps them down. They keep getting up whenever they fall down. They are so focused on what they are trying to achieve that nothing can stop them. They just keep chugging along no matter what.
# 11 Time Management: Time is our most precious asset. Successful network marketers are very good with time management. Whether they do the business part time or full time, they work smart and never waste time. They plan out their day, have a work schedule, have a to do list, and always focus on the money producing activities.
# 12 Discipline: I learned discipline in the Army. It’s probably the one skill that has helped me the most in my business. Successful people in life are disciplined with their habits. They create winning habits. They do what they say they are going to do. They finish what they start. They manage their time well. They are accountable. They are reliable. They are doers. You can count on them.
# 13 Patience: Successful network marketers are patient. They don’t expect to get rich quick. They know that it takes time and hard work to build a business. They know that Rome wasn’t built in a day. They keep their goals in front of them, they work hard every day, and they realize that good things take time to achieve.
# 14 Specialized Knowledge: The final skill that network marketers have is specialized knowledge. They have mastered the skills of prospecting, inviting, showing the plan, following up, training their team and getting customers. They have spent YEARS mastering these skills. The skills it takes to succeed in this industry are quite different than most other industries. Top earners are students of their profession. They take their personal and professional development very seriously and they are always trying to learn something new each day.
In review, these are my top 14 secrets to succeeding in network marketing. Although this might sound overwhelming at first, you will find that this is quite manageable to do when you break this down into small, bite-sized chunks. You won’t master these things overnight, but you can get really good at them within a few short years.
In the next training session, I will outline two separate strategies you can follow to get your business up and going. Either strategy will work. You simply need to pick the one that’s best for you.
